INTO THE EYE · THE ANCIENT COSMOS
What we know.
What we infer.
The game follows the film’s reference track. It holds exact samples instead of pretending to measure the air continuously. The ship and its escape are a story.
Read the labels
- MEASURED
- From a spacecraft or telescope reference. Galileo’s descent tables are smoothed profile rows, rather than raw sensor readings.
- MODEL
- From a published cloud, chemistry or radiation model.
- ESTIMATE
- The Ancient Cosmos’ own calculation from the published sources; method shown.
- UNKNOWN
- Nobody has measured it here.
- STORY
- The fictional ship, drones, shield, hull limit and hazards. Flight timing, scores and system percentages are game values.
Keep these limits in view
- Galileo fell at 6.5 ° N MEASURED in a dry hot spot, not into the Great Red Spot.
- Colours below the cloud tops are inferred. No camera has looked out from inside.
- Winds inside the Great Red Spot below the cloud tops are UNKNOWN.
- Tornado-like vortex columns have NEVER been seen on Jupiter. The game columns and their calm cores are STORY.
- Everything below Galileo’s last pressure, 22.05 bar MEASURED, is ESTIMATE.
- The ship, drones, shield, hull limit and hazards are STORY.
Method: hotter as pressure rises
Below the last Galileo profile row, extend the dry adiabat: T = 428 K MEASURED × (P / 22.05 bar MEASURED)0.298 ESTIMATE. The measured lapse-rate magnitude is 1.944 K/km MEASURED. Depth beneath the anchor comes from the temperature difference divided by that lapse rate.
This assumes ideal gas, constant heat capacity and constant gravity. Moisture changes the profile. Hydrogen’s heat capacity rises in the deep; the gas eventually stops behaving ideally. Treat the deep profile as an estimate, with growing uncertainty.
Method: air as a shield
Air column = pressure / gravity. Use 23.7 m/s² ESTIMATE for the local gravity estimate. At the reference level the column is about 420 g/cm² ESTIMATE, or 41 % ESTIMATE of Earth’s 1,033 g/cm² MEASURED. Near 2.4 bar ESTIMATE, there is more air above than at Earth’s surface. This is a column comparison, not a measured crew radiation dose. No verified dose is displayed.
